How to Keep a Highlight Journal
For some, the idea of starting a journal is too daunting. How am I supposed to fill several pages each day when nothing seems to be happening?
Simple answer: You don’t.
If the idea of a journal is overwhelming but you still want to try, consider a highlight journal.
A highlight journal is quite simple — record one highlight from your day that you want to remember.
This highlight can be as big or as small as you want. It can be positive, negative, or neutral. You might record births and deaths, meetings and events, or vacations and new pets. You might record smaller happenings or observations about the weather, conversations, or coffee.
You can record this highlight in any calendar or planner. A mini notebook also might work. (These links are not sponsored.)
A highlight journal need not be written words, either.
If you have the skills, try sketching your daily highlights.
If you like making collages, use magazine, newspaper, and online clippings to assemble an image of your daily highlight.
If you are a photographer, use the camera to create an image or video for another kind of collage for your daily highlight.
Digital options abound. For writing, consider Notes, Journal, or Freeform on the Apple platform. Other apps might include Goodnotes or Notability. Notion and Obsidian further offer customization options.
The app BeReal takes much of the thinking out of the recording process. Each day, the app sends a notification to take an image of what is around you and that images is shared on the app with your friends and other users. Snapchat can offer a similar option, but you will need to choose the times of day.
Overall, pick your medium, pick your highlight, and start recording.
Have you tried a highlights journal or something similar? How did it go for you?
